God is Pro-Life
Last week we saw that life is amazing at the microscopic level, but King David also came up with the best word to describe the miraculous life growing in the womb: “me.” He wrote (speaking to God), “You knit me together in my mother’s womb” (Psalm 139:13).
You see, you didn’t come from a fertilized egg any more than you came from a teenager. No, you were a child, and before that you were a baby and before that you were an embryo. That embryo had all of your genetic information from the very moment of conception. In a word, that embryo was “you.”
Even if there were no Word of God to guide us on the question of life, we could go to science and ask three compelling questions about that growing mass of cells inside the womb: Is it alive? Is it human? Is it a distinct life from its mother?
By any definition of life you choose, by the humanity written into the DNA, by the genetic code of the unborn child that is different from any cell in the woman’s body, science must answer “yes” three times. These facts are not in dispute.
But the deeper question is this: what is the value of life?
God in his Word doesn’t talk about “quality of life.” Each life is precious. Each life has value. A Down’s Syndrome baby, an octogenarian on life-support, the president of the United States and an embryo developing in the womb all have equal value. They are alive. Their value lies in what they are to God. Not trash, not animal, not accident. No. A special creation, designed by God. “Fearfully and wonderfully made.”
As a nation, we are shocked and disgusted as we watch a mother stand trial for allegedly killing her own daughter. Yet where is the shock and outrage over tiny body parts in plastic bags? Have we lost our minds?
These are hard words, I know. But if I try too hard not to offend you, I will offend God instead.
God affirmed that life starts in the womb when he told the prophet Jeremiah , “Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, before you were born I set you apart.” (Jeremiah 1:5).
Your importance to God is highlighted in the work of His Son, who was called Jesus from the moment of his conception. Jesus gave up his life that you might have eternal life in Him. Each soul is precious to God.
To all this discussion about life in science labs and lecture halls, we add three words that tell what life really is: a “time of grace.” God’s grace.
Thank God for your time of grace, and worship Him by honoring the sanctity of life.
